Blower Door Testing FAQ
Answers to frequently asked questions about the process of getting an air leakage test completed…
The current NYS residential code says that a new construction single family house needs to have less than 3 air changes per hour under test conditions (ACH50). So with the blower door running and depressurizing the house to negative 50 pascals, the code requires that the rate of air leakage is less than 3 complete changes of the house’s air volume.
This threshold will vary depending on the size of your house, which is why we take measurements of the house when the blower door test is conducted.
Easy Blower Door will email your report to you within 24 hours of your test.
Make sure that the building envelope is completed and that all of the building envelope penetrations have been installed. Do any desired air sealing prior to the day of your blower door test. Make sure that your doors and windows are able to close and latch properly.
Finally, be at the project address at the scheduled time to meet the blower door technician.
When the technician arrives at the house, they will unpack and get their equipment set up, and then set up the house for test conditions. This will include verifying that the building envelope is complete, that exterior doors and windows are closed, and that interior doors are open. The technician will take measurements of the house and then run the blower door test. The test itself is usually quite brief. The tech will then record their measurements, pack up, and be on their way to the next house!
The cost of a blower door test for new construction code compliance varies slightly depending where in New York State you are located, but is between $300-400. If you go to our Book Now page and enter your zip code, you will see updated pricing for your area.
